Funky Noisemakers
Kids love making noise at midnight. Let them design a custom noisemaker using everyday objects. For the noisemaker container, use empty plastic food jars, or simply glue the open ends of two cups together. Easier yet, fold a paper plate in half and staple the edges shut. Fill the inside with dry beans or rice, uncooked corn kernels or even small jingle bells. Let kids decorate the outside of the container with glitter, sparkly pens, stick-on jewels, feathers and sequins.
Sparkly Fireworks
Do this project after children have seen a real fireworks show. Give them each a black piece of construction paper or poster board. Open the tip of a glue bottle very slightly and let them draw their own fireworks with the glue. Tell them to try to remember the different types of fireworks they saw during the show. Sprinkle the glue with different colors of glitter, and shake off the excess. After the glue has dried, you can cut out the fireworks and tape them to a long piece of ribbon to make a decorative streamer.
Custom Calendar
Let older children decorate a calendar that they can use for the upcoming year. Buy or make a blank calendar. Write in the dates yourself or let children do it, ensuring they note important holidays and birthdays. Supply kids with photographs of themselves and family as well as scrapbooking paper and embellishments. This is a great way to use any unwanted scrapbooking materials left over at the end of the year. Teach children how to theme each page for the month. You can also teach children about coordinating and contrasting colors and other art concepts.
Handprint Poster
This art project also serves as a memento for parents. Give the child a sheet of sturdy poster board. With a foam brush, let the child paint one hand with glittery washable paint. Silver and gold are colors appropriate for the New Year. Have the child make four hand prints in a row on the paper. With glitter glue, let the child write the new year numbers across the hands, one number on each palm. Above the hand prints, write “Happy New Year” with glitter glue and let children decorate the poster with shiny stickers.
